The Workshop on Woodland Ecology and Management will be given by Dietrich
Heiseke on 29 May - 02 June 2006 in the Pyrenean area of Southern France
Our woodlands are of inestimable value: Shelter against climatic extremes and erosion, a source of fresh water and unpolluted air, a reservoir for food, health, energy and raw material for many products of modern life, and for recreation and recovery.
Nevertheless, the world-wide deforestation is alarming caused by Illegal cutting, need for farmland, housing, industry and economic pressure. Also fire catastrophes, lack of knowledge and deficiency of sustainable techniques results in loss of woodlands. Very often we don’t find suggestions, programs or measures to save these important resources.
The planned workshop wants to contribute to understanding and practical training on woodland ecology and management of different woodland types for owners of small forest properties, personal working in nature conservation, environmental programs and amateurs interested in trees. The program includes:
• Characteristics of forest ecosystems
• Concepts of sustainable forest production
• Guaranties and standards for a sustainable forestry
• Measurement and calculation in different forest types
• Silvicultural management of chestnut, oak, beech, Douglas fir, pine
• Selective thinning and pruning systems
• Practical training in estimation of volume and increment
• Practical training in thinning and pruning
• Examples of reforestation, plantation and natural regeneration
• Excursions and visits to different forest ecological sites
• Forest management and natural conservation
